Installation of MANHOLE TOPS and GULLY TOPS

The manhole/gully top and the well constitute a single structure capable of withstanding all traffic loads. The duration of this assembly depends upon the quality of all the components and upon the perfect installation of the same.


The accuracy of manhole/gully top installation is basic to ensure the duration of the structure.

In addition to the installation accuracy, also the used materials must be chosen as function of the place of installation of the device.


Before starting any kind of work, it is necessary to properly evaluate the type of intervention, and in particular it is necessary to consider that the manhole / caditoia must always be of the appropriate class according to the place of use and, consequently,to the stresses to which it will be subject / as indicated by the UNI EN 124 standard and the manufacturer's recommendations.


In case of doubt, a device with a class higher than the one strictly expected must be used; the frame of the device must have shape similar to the chamber upon which has to be installed and the clear opening must be compatible with the one of the chamber, in order to ensure the complete support of the device on the top of the chamber and / or a maximum value of contact pressure equal to 7.5 N / mm² is ensured (UNI/TR 11256).


Place the frame on the chamber while providing protection for the inside from any burrs of mortar during installation. (see pics 1-2-3)


Make sure that the cement mortar,(made using Portland cement with class of compressive strength of at least 50 N / mm² and following the timing of maturation specified by the manufacturer), fills the space below the frame and overflows from the slots and ensure the leveling of the piece on the support base.


Any material used to reach the desired height of the frame must be of a material suitable for use in which they are intended, they must have a minimum compressive strength of 20N/mm² and must be inserted between the top of the chamber and the area of frame support appropriately combined in the filling material.


It is forbidden to use bricks, tiles and / or broken tiles, pieces of wood or plastic and, in any case, any material which does not give the necessary guarantees for strength and durability.


It is not allowed the positioning of the frame directly on chamber without use of cement mortar. The mortar, during filling, must not get to the edge of the frame (at least 3cm - 4cm below) so as to allow the finishing level with the subsequent paving of the bituminous surface. (fig. 4 and 5)


If a quick installation is needed, the manhole / gully top must be placed on quick setting cement with the following minimum requirements:

  • Maximum granulometry 4 mm

  • Density of fresh mortar> 2100 kg / m³

  • Volumetric expansion in 1 day +0.5%

  • Working time ~ 15 mins

  • Resistance to compression after 30mins >1.5 N/mm²

  • Resistance to compression after 1hr >8.0 N/mm²

  • Resistance to compression after 24hrs >35.0 N/mm²

  • Resistance to compression after 28days >50.0 N/mm²

  • Duration and consistency of performance over time.


    After removing the protection for the inside of the frame, clean up any residual of bitumen and mortar from the following parts:

  • The supporting surfaces of the covers;

  • The compartments of hinges where present;

  • The holes for keys where present;

  • The internal gaskets where present.


    The cover must be carefully placed in the frame ( by a mechanical lifting device or lifting keys ) only after the bedding material has sufficiently set in order to do not compromise the correct positioning.(pic 4.)


    Before make passable the manhole cover/ gully top the concrete curing time provided by the manufacturer must be respected, in absence of indications observe a waiting period of at least 72 hours.

    Replacement of already installed product.

    In the case of replacement of old device, free the top of the chamber by providing a housing space for the frame of a size of at least 1.6 times the external dimension of the frame to install. The depth of the housing compartment is in function of the height of the device to install. Prepare the surface with a construction tool (pick axe) to increase adhesion with cement mortar. Clean the surface from debris that may compromise the perfect fitting of the new product,and lay a layer of mortar of 2cm-4cm between the frame and chamber. To allow easy positioning at the desired level of the product to be installed, you can connect two cross pieces to the frame with iron wire (this is especially important for manholes subject to road traffic). Perform the above steps for the completion of the installation.



    Installation with prefabricated slab

    The use of prefabricated slabs, making installation simpler than the traditional installation, allows considerable economy on working times. It also allows to have a ready-to-use device in a faster way. The use of a prefabricated slab, if placed in a workmanlike on a ground properly compacted, allows a distribution of the loads over the entire surface of the slab, thus reducing the action of compression exerted on the chamber below.




    The use of mortars must follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the product (dosage, water / cement ratio, laying, curing times). Observe the minimum curing time of the mortar before soliciting manhole with loads exercise. The minimum time is in function of temperature and humidity. Avoid direct contact between the compaction devices and the manhole cover / gully top to avoid possible damage to the frame, the cover / grate and the mortar bedding layer.



    Concrete filling of the covers

    The concrete filling of manhole covers type Berte, Modigliani and Giambellino should be carried out according to certain rules, particularly for installation in places where there are extreme temperature fluctuations or which require a particularly hard work of the manhole. The inner surface of the manhole shall be free from any residue that may affect the adhesion of the concrete (oil, grease, sand, etc..) The concrete shall be laid at a temperature not lower than 10 ° C and the filling shall be performed in the right measure and properly leveled. It is recommended to keep the same roughness of the surrounding road. After filling, for the first 24 h of maturation, it should be covered with a tarp to prevent rapid drying. In the case of temperatures below 10 ° C, the protection must be maintained for at least 48h. It is recommended to curing the concrete according to the times and the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the mortars.




    N.B. Failure to follow the installation instructions, specified in the certificate UNI/TR 11256, exempts the Mario Cirino Pomicino S.p.A. from any liability, including to third parties.




    The proper maintenance of the devices guarantee the good working of the same.


    we recommend the following activities:

  • frequently check the locking devices and the housings of hinges designed to realize the full opening and the 90° safety lock;

  • periodically check, depending on the stresses of exercise, the gaskets, if provided, and proceed, if necessary, with

  • replacement;

  • keep clean and well greased the bearing surfaces of covers and gratings after each opening.
